Yes, but a plain old English manager would not be shrouded in controversy grab the headlines now, would he? And the FA love to be in the headlines, preferably for the wrong reason.
Harry Redknapp was the bookies favourite, until today's result, now he isn't even an outsider for the role.

current betting
You are here: Home / Teams / International / Next England Manager Betting Next England Manager Betting
Fabio Capello’s contract with England was coming to an end after Euro 2012 Championship making the Next England Manager Betting an exciting market at the moment, however he sensationally quit his position on 8th February 2012 making the betting even more exciting.
With the FA believed to be keen to appoint an Englishman this time, it is Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp who currently tops the betting and would no doubt be a popular choice with both players and supporters. The 64-year-old has been installed as the odds-on favourite for the job after being cleared of all charges in his tax evasion trial. Other names in the frame include Stuart Pearce, Guus Hiddink and Jose Mourinho.
It has been confirmed that Stuart Pearce will take charge of England’s upcoming friendly against the Netherlands.

I persoally like the idea of Stuart Pearce. He has the knowledge of the younger players that are coming through the youth stages and the young players are what we will need if we are ever going to win anything major.

He has the knowledge of the younger players that are coming through the youth stages and the young players are what we will need if we are ever going to win anything major. England will never win anything, since about 2000ish there has been too many egotistical pricks who are interested only in playing, and making a name for themselves, to increase their financial demands and celebrity status. There is no team spirit, there is no desire to be a part of and play as a part of a team. Additionally, the FA have revelled in just about any controversy they have walked into. I am still gob smacked that Capello was allowed to remain as manager, despite his obvious involvement in the Calciopoli farce. But then, it managed to grab the headlines for the FA, and that is what they were looking for.

I'm going to throw Gary Lineker into the mix I think.
