Parents looking for a free, worthwhile activity for their youngsters to take part in this Easter – one which could potentially save their life – will be interested to hear about a series of cycle safety courses.
Wirral Council’s Road Safety team, in partnership with Bikeright, is hosting Bikeability Level 1 and 2 courses – which is the modern version of the Cycling Proficiency Test.
The on-road cycle training courses for children over the age of 10 will be available next month. The course comprises of two sessions on two different days and children have to attend every two-hour session and bring along their own, roadworthy bike and a cycle helmet.
The courses are taking place at Birkenhead Park, beginning and ending at the Visitor Centre. The first course runs on Monday 2nd and Thursday 5th April, with the morning Level 1 session (Learn to Ride) taking place between 10am-noon. The afternoon Level 2 session takes place between 1pm-3pm.
The second course takes place on Tuesday 10th and Friday 13th April, again with Level 1 at 10am-noon and Level 2 at 1pm-3pm.
Adults are not left out of the bike safety training this time, either, as a course for adults is also planned for Wednesday 4th and Wednesday 11th April, again with Level 1 at 10am-noon and Level 2 at 1pm-3pm at Birkenhead Park.
To get an information pack and book a place on any of the courses, people should contact Bikeright on 0151 482 5700 . For the children’s sessions, parents will need to complete a consent form. Bookings for the first two sessions must be made by 25th March.
Cllr. Dave Mitchell, Wirral Council Cabinet Member for Street scene and Transport Services, said: “These free courses will provide people with the skills to help them ride their bikes more safely out on the road.”

That sounds like a worthwhile event. Let's hope there is a good take up on this.
