Wasn't that cafe called the Top Twenty ? They had of those Italian type frothy coffee machines. Loads of steam, burps, farts etc. Scalding hot stuff in a Pyrex cup & saucer. I thought the ted's wore brothel creepers ? Oh dear, maybe I moved in different social circles ?

My younger sister and I used to go the Plaza Cinema on Borough Road on Sat.mornings (back in the '50's) for the 'Auntie Gladys' Club - used to sing along the 'bouncing ball'. I think there was also an organ there that came up out of the pit. Just along the road was the Kingsland Ballroom. Across the street was a cafe whose name escapes me now - they had a big jukebox I think and the tedddy boys used to stand outside there in their 'beetle crusher' shoes. Are you talking about me again, inch thick soles and tops bulled up that much it would make a squaddie turn green

LOL, I had to search through all the pages,(I started at the end), to discover what you were referring to! Fortunately I knew what Chiccy's avatar looked like so I didn't have to read everything. Don't worry, you're not the only one who does it.

OK anybody remember the "Electricity Machines"?? at Raby Mere. You put in sixpence? hold two metal handles and turn one, Hey Presto electric shock. The more that were on it the better, kids don't know what they are missing today.
Dave Miller Oh, yes, I remember them well! They were only a penny when I remember them. Can't imagine those getting past Health & Safety now. There was also a "What the Butler saw" machine & one where you tested your grip. We sometimes used to hire a motor boat on the mere. i remember them all, do you remember the swinging boats? and the ice-cream stall,i am going back to late sixties.

I remember the swing boats in the 40's, 50's and the row boats on the mere. Couldn't afford to go on them. We all used to go on a charabanc from Vine Street, take our own butties and I think you could get hot water to make a pot of tea. To us a day out was a day out even if there were no other fring benefits we still used to love it.
