After viewing quite a few properties over the past year or so, I am struggling to understand if these estate agents actually want to rent their houses out. The condition of some of them has a lot to be desired. Mouldy walls, leaking roofs, rotting wood window ledges to name but a few examples. Then the landlords have to cheek to request you fit certain criteria ie, NO DHSS, NO PETS etc . Some of these properties are not fit for humans to live in, never mind animals!!!

I totally agree with you, a member of my family, is on his third flat in the area, the first was so damp we "negotiated" a premature end to the tenancy agreement, as it wasnt fit for human habitation.
The second had major electrical issues and a heating system that should have been condemned, we had to replace a bathroom sink that had developed a hairline crack, which we failed to spot on first inspection, they knew about it, then blamed the tenant, we were liable it seems.
We also had to supply and fit a new cooker that was included in the agreement but magically dissapeared before taking tenancy, on top of this we had to arrange and pay for the removal of old white goods that had been left behind.
The latest property has had a litany of disasters, backed up by a non existent landlord, a refusal to listen or take action, until it's time for renewal of the tenancy agreement.
All of these properties needed a guarantor due to the situation that my family member is in. Because there are benefits involved the industry assumes much about the character of the proposed tenant and as a result only offers the bottom bracket to this market.
We are forced to pay for background checks on ourselves and pay deposits that are only refundable if the property is returned in a fit state, when the property has never reached anything approaching fit for purpose.
We have chosen the best for the budget and have recieved dirty, unfit for use properties. We have yet to find a decent property, estate agency or landlord in the area.
Rachmanism is alive and well on the peninsula it seems.
There are three new builds on the corner of Clwyd St and Mount Pleasant Road, not sure who the developer is, although small, they look well equipped and are brand new, might be worth a look.
Hope you find somewhere

Thanks for the feedback on this topic. I went to view another property this evening. Again, it badly needed updating. The landlord has no intention of doing anything more than 'emergency' repairs. Somehow, the house we live in now doesn't seem so bad!

You just have to keep looking. I looked around for almost 5 months, and was about to get evicted by the time something came up. My house had had water coming in for a year and damp and dry rot. Just started to find the little damp spots in this new one now!!!! Some of the places we looked at during those 5 months were not fit for my dog!!! Keep looking and good luck!!
