Hi, Want my 2002 BMW x5 3.0D remapping, mainly as it's sluggish and i'd like a bit better MPG, currently says i'm getting 26mpg, but i think it's more like 22ish
Been quoted £250 at total tints, but I find this a bit more than I want to pay. I want a proper remap though, and not one of these bolt on things that just cons the ECU to put more fuel in etc...
Thanks, Kevo

Have you had the car checked out with a diagnostic? If its been regularly serviced and unusually sluggish there may be other problems that need resolving before you remap.

no problem, he's a top bloke. Finally got a reply from sk's, quite shocked at the quote of £450. Not sure how they can justify charging that for the relatively short time it would take.

It all depends on what they'll do. Maybe it will spend time on a rolling road before the remap and is tweaked a few times and fully checked afterwards? Their website isn't that detailed though. I Googled a remapper at random and their service said: Many parameters are changed when developing a custom remap such as :
Boost Pressure Fuel pressure Timing EGR The timing of fuel & boost pressure
The above is changed every time although this may not sound like a lot, this all has to be put together in perfect harmony every time to ensure we exceed your expectations. If you want to cut corners then just get one of those kits off Ebay for £20 with a disc full of maps.

Not sure how they can justify charging that for the relatively short time it would take. if you want it cheap then just get a generic map thrown on it for a couple of hundred quid or as gibbo said just buy a disc of maps and do the same thing as most places do. don't want to sound funny but you asked for 'best' place for remap, not cheapest. i took my saab to a guy in north wales, 'specialist' in mapping and he just dumped a generic map on, even had to ring his mate and get him to email him the map!! the car obviously had a small boost leak but he was clueless as to what was up with it. if you want i can pm you his number and he will dump a map on for £350.

Yeah I know what your saying, apparently the remapping that total tints do are specific maps to the vehicle. and was quoted £250 by them, so I'm just comparing this price to their price. I just don't know how they can justify that price for the time they will spend on the car. I didn't say I wanted the cheapest, but I did say i've been quoted £250 and it's a bit more than i'm wanting to spend. He didn't mention rolling road in the email, just said he'd put it on the diagnostics before hand. Which yes they should all do , and most prob don't. But I can't see how they could justify the cost for £450. And yes I know the equipment and software can be costly depending one what they use. But I still can't help thinking that's a huge cost/hour. Anyway thanks for the comments, but I won't be spending £450 on a remap for it. I obv don't need the £350 guys number thanks :-) Kev

When mapping, in the case of diesel BMWs you will also need a code to unlock the ECU to put the new map on - some of the remap price includes the mapper getting that (they have to pay for it) as its a specialist thing. Ive had lots of BMWs, currently on my 4th remapped diesel. I have a custom map which was done on a rolling road on the current 335d, but with past cars Ive used generic maps, from reputable mappers. If you use the owners clubs there are loads dotted round that people will have used and will come recommended. You may also be able to find a group buy which may bring the cost down. In the past, my 325tds cost £260, E46 330d was £250 (as part of a group buy), the E61 530d was £250 also in a group buy so the Total Tinting cost is reasonable. As mentioned, the EGRs can be troublesome - try removing it and giving it a clean, they can soot up and stick open causing loss of power and poor economy. You can remove them, but depending on the age of the car it may need to be mapped out and disconnecting it / removing it could cause ECU errors without the ECU modification. (My 330d didnt need an ECU mod when I removed it, but the 530d and current 335d did) For reference, I used ECOTune Scotland for the 530 and 335, but I did also buy their DPF delete pipes too. ....also, dont use a Tuning Box, they are cheap, but crude A good map will produce very little black smoke - they do introduce more boost, so more fuel is required, but a good map should be no different to std - a little puff of kick down and then clear through the rest of the rev range.
