Running an oldish non electronic diesel? Want to save a fortune on fuel? Waste or new vegetable oil will do this! New at under£1 a litre, just pour it in & go! Waste is often free & very easy to process using an old berco boiler, a nylon coffee filter & petrol. You can make 2500l a year for your own use legally. Petrol is a taxed fuel!!! You may have to change fuel filters more often,& glow plugs do go, but at 80p/GALLON who cares! Like the idea? Get back to me for more details. I've done over 100,000 miles smelling like a barbecue,& YES I have been dipped,NOTHING they could do me for! skylarc.

What your not telling the good folk of wikiwirral is that eventually it WILL break your fuel pump.

IE a transit van will set you back £800 to repair the pump.

You say non electronic cars?

Who drives around in smelly dirty and slow oil burning diesels these days?

Err....that would be me :-)

We've had this discussion about waste oil before. I tend to use new (£1 litre), can use it straight in my old Pajero (pig to start on cold mornings) or mixed in my Voyager (Mk1 will run on straight, Mk2 & 3 need to be mixed, a lot).

Newer engines won't run on it (some won't run on Bio either) you just need to check, hundreds of sites out there will tell you which/how etc.

If you can get it from your local chip shop or Indian takeaway great. Time was when they'd PAY YOU to take it, now most know it's for fuel and want back almost what they paid for it new.

It 'can' screw up your engine, depending how you use it and what you use it in. I found that adding white spirit to the oil thinned it down for easier starting in the Pajero (you do have to pay tax on white spirit used....no really, you do, I have the receipts).

Go into it with your eyes open, it can save money, don't kid yourself you're saving the planet and it's all green, it's about the money, if you wanted to save the planet you'd have bought a bike :-)

Lucas/Delphi pumps can brake the shaft, an inherent fault not caused by the fuel. Bosch pumps don't suffer this fault. Old car, why repair pump? Fit second hand pump £40-50, & good excuse to change cam belt at same time! 2 Fords,4 Peugeots & well over 250,000 miles, no problems with the fuel systems. Common rail engines will NOT tolerate anything but very clean straight diesel fuel, even so some will require VERY expensive repairs after not much over 100000 miles due to the very high injection pressures they use(20,000psi).You pays your money, you takes your chance! Skylarc.

Cycling down Bidston rd a few years back and an old Land Rover went past, the chippy smell was making me hungry.

The buses in my neck of the woods run on old cooking oil. Have been in operation a few years now with seemingly no problems.

Normally there is no detectable pong as they drive along, but on rare occasions it does smell like Saturday night down at the chippy. I suppose the "mix" varies somewhat.

LPG for me, 18 months into ownership and dont know why more people dont use it or convert, paying 71 pence per litre. though the 3.4 litre engine likes a big drink when we go out.

I have a petrol Voyager (yes I like them, useful vehicles) and a Subaru that run on LPG. It is a lot cheaper but they do have to be serviced every year. Like many things you can get away with not doing it, but if/when it goes wrong you only have yourself to blame.

On LPG (multi point system) I get about the same MPG and similar power to petrol, but as the engines in both are 3.3l it would take a lot to notice the difference.

Just as a price check, 71p is a bit high for LPG, I'm paying around 65p at the moment.

Nice one TheDr, Haven't managed to pay less than 67p a litre yet, I know I can get it a bit cheaper at a specialist filling station on Derby Road Liverpool, I generally fill up at the Shell nr Sainsburys, Upton - or Shell in Liverpool. I have paid as much as 83p a litre off a remote station in Shropshire.

Sounds like you have a good deal on your supplier - willing to share?

I have a BRC system on a Toyota Colorado gets serviced when the car is done - mainly had small electrical problems with solenoids, relays etc.

No difference in power, uses 10% more gas than it does petrol, have a 60 litre tank - wish it was twice that though.

I traded down from new car ownership 3 years ago and decided to run older stuff, my Toyota is coming up for 14 years old - cant see me changing it soon.

K
