http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/dad-speaks-devastation-after-dog-7460310*LINK CONTAINS A DISTRESSING IMAGE A dad has spoken of his devastation after his dog was attacked in a park. Leslie Whitaker, from Birkenhead, says pet Jack Russell, Stitch was left with serious injuries after being savaged by a lurcher. Claughton councillor George Davies says it is the latest in a series of vicious dog attacks in Birkenhead Park and he is now calling for a new law to ban dogs from being let off the lead there.

Sad for the poor dog and it`s family, but I`m still against dogs being allowed in public parks or beaches on a lead or not. Exercise the dogs on a lead on public highways, lead in one hand, pooper scooper in the other. I`m sure dogs don't check out the scenery and don't mind if they walk around the block or along the prom.

People should know their dogs better. I have two, The lab has never so much as looked at another dog so she gets a run off the lead. The Shorkie wants to have a pop at anything with four legs so she stays on the lead, simples. Hope poor stitch makes a speedy recovery.

What a dreadful thing to happen. It's a strange law that we have with dogs.
If a dog attacks a child, the owner can face prosecution and the dog put to sleep, but if a dog attacks another dog there is nothing to be done if the dog is not a banned breed ? It would seem that we have to sit and wait for a fatality to happen ?
If a dog is of that nature, it's very worrying. I agree with Zipper, they should all be on a lead and if people have a breed of dog that needs more exercise, then they need to walk further to give the right amount of exercise. It's all part of being a responsible dog owner.
My dog was never off his lead in a public place, mainly because he wasn't always in the best frame of mind, and probably due to the fact that he was bullied by other dogs all his life. Don't know why that would be, but he was. Must have been gay.

My dog was attacked at Birkenhead Park when he was a puppy, he had his cheek ripped open and required stitches. I slowly started to walk in other places and no longer go b'head park.
As for the comments about people only walking dogs on lead, why should we? My dog is under control off lead and wont go near a dog if I command him not to. He loves running between the trees and in the long grass.

Maybe it could be protecting your own dog from other more aggressive dogs. Two sides to every coin.

It must be the same in all parks,a small dog got attacked by a greyhound in Victoria park last tuesday & I got told to drunk idiots with an akita same colour as mine attacked a dog day before this is why I go to the beach lot less hassle.I only go when it's quiet & after only having her 2 & 1/2 years I can let her off the lead & she won't go very far but it's the responsible owners will have to suffer too many idiots on the wrong end of the lead.
no1s gonna keep me from u

ive looked after other peoples dogs along with my own 2. ive had 7 off the lead ,in the park, at one time, and was in full vocal command of them all.
any i have that i have doubts about, they do not come off the lead.and if i have more than my 2, they don't come off the lead until they have defacated
the key to any dog is full socialization, un unsocialized dog is a dangerous dog, regardless of breed.

Given the amount of vandalism, anti-social behaviour & asaults that go on in the parks, I'm suprised 'Claughton councillor George Davies' does not call for people to be banned from our open spaces & beaches. I'm sure the animals would all just get along fine then.....
