During the winter of 1895 the Mersey was covered in ice. To the right of the view the coal barge the Emily is anchored a short distance from the Egremont ferry pier

People have gathered on an area known locally as the Green Hill, which over looked the Mersey. In the distance can be seen the Egremont ferry pier

High seas batter the promenade at Egremont. This section of the promenade through to New Brighton was constructed in the late 1890's

The Egremont floating landing stage viewed from a ferryboat. The ferry was used daily by many of the residents of Egremont to travel to Liverpool.

The oil tanker British Commander aground and having demolished a large section of the ferry pier at Egremont. The accident happened in 1933 and the following year ferry service reopened

In May 1941 the Egremont ferry pier was rammed by the coasting steamer Newlands. This view shows how much damage was caused by the vessel

Looking out to the Egremont ferry landing stage. Below the tangled steel work can be seen a stone slipway, on which the old running stage was winched in and out

The damage the Newlands caused was so extensive to the Egremont ferry pier, that no attempts were made to repair the structure

The Egremont landing stage later towed away to Tranmere and broken up. The pier was demolished in 1946 and the stone slipway beneath taken away
