Was chatting to my sisters boyfriend about this last night He gets the same problem on his MGF, and is currently working on a GRP mould which will surround the filter and have a flexi pipe attached as the cold air feed. This should reduce the risk of warm air being sucked in

I don't like the cone shaped open filter at all. They provide little or no cold air to the engine. The only advantage over panel filters is they're louder, but the panel is closed away in an airbox.
Have you thought about getting a piece of aluminium and shaping it around the filter?

Rob, it'll have to be custom made - I can get some for the Escort for about £8, Checkout the Punto owners club to see if they can help
