A mother and her two children have been rescued after becoming trapped by the incoming tide off West Kirby in Wirral.

The woman, 33, used her mobile phone to raise the alarm after the trio, one of them a two-year-old boy in a pushchair, had been in the water for an hour.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue said the woman, her 14-year-old son and the toddler, were trapped at South Parade, Hilbre Island, on Tuesday afternoon.

Paramedics treated the family at the scene for exposure.
