Arrowe Park Hospital wing to be named after Liverpool DJ Phil Easton

A £850,000 Ronald McDonald House is due to be built at the Wirral hospital to give the relatives of sick youngsters somewhere to stay.

One of the seven rooms will be a play area named after the Crosby radio broadcaster who died in February aged 59.

A campaign to raise £50,000 for the room was launched by Phil’s former employers Radio City.

The bid is being backed by celebrities including Rafa Benitez, Jamie Carragher, Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore and TV star Ricky Tomlinson.

The building will accommodate seven families at a time, acting as a "home away from home" allowing parents to get some rest in a comfortable environment as close to their child as possible.

It means the Wirral hospital will have a Ronald McDonald House, similar to the one at Alder Hey, by the end of the year.

Some 9,000 children from across Merseyside stay at the hospital every year.

The centre will also have a kitchen, a dining area and a quiet room, as well as its own entrance.

The bulk of the money has come from Ronald McDonald House Charities , the good cause set up by the fast food giant.

Phil collapsed after suffering a suspected brain haemorrhage at his Crosby home.

The death of the former host of the much-loved Great Easton Express stunned the media world and led to a mass of tributes from stars including Chris de Burgh and Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale.

His funeral was held last month and a public memorial is scheduled for the Anglican Cathedral in March.

The presenter was also a popular figure at Anfield where he worked as the club’s pitchside announcer for home fixtures.

The radio station is asking people to phone the appeal hot line on 0151 472 8900 to make a donation.

More information on the appeal can be found online at www.radiocity.co.uk

I think that was the plan...

I heard the letter to Radio City when they read it out and it was quite touching.

Good luck to them for getting the funds together happy

Liverpool FC star Sami Hyypia's £23,000 gift to children's hospital charity appeal
[Linked Image]

LIVERPOOL footballer Sami Hyypia today forked out almost £23,000 to rescue a Merseyside hospital charity appeal.

The iconic Reds defender stepped in to make up the shortfall for a playroom at a new Arrowe Park children’s accommodation complex.

It is being named after the late broadcaster Phil Easton, who died last month aged 59.

The 35-year-old heard about Radio City’s Cash for Charity appeal to help fund a seven-room £850,000 Ronald McDonald House in Wirral.

Today big-hearted Finn Hyypia told the ECHO: “My youngest boy was born in Arrowe Park and from my own experience I know the fantastic work that the staff do.

“As a parent myself I realise how difficult it must be if a child is being treated in hospital for a serious illness and I wanted to make some contribution to enable this facility to be built.”

After hearing about the appeal Sami rang the radio station and promised to meet any shortfall needed to reach the £50,000 target.
