Sorry I didn't know the family at all, but I do know there is a family that live in my road and have seen a male and female with children going between the 2 properties, it's very sad news I have to say and my condolences go out to who ever the family are, the loss of a life is so great considering you can get free fire alarms from the fire service.
I work for a local social landlord and I believe that rules and checks should imposed on these cowboy people who call them self’s landlords, every home should have a minimum standard to ensure tenants are safe while they occupies these properties.
Sorry Paul I didn’t get to take any pictures at the time, but I have to say for the amount of emergency services that were there it had to be serious.

Were with a h.a and have to let gas servicemen in once a year to check the appliances and they also test the smoke alarms. We liable to go to court if dont let them in. Im not moaning im just saying these rules that protect landlord+ tennants should also apply to private landlords. Or are they supposed to already? I have a Private landlord who is shit hot on Fire safety. Every year he has the fire alarms, fire extinguishes, fire blanket etc checked by the Fire Service on all his properties. He gives you a weeks notice and if you are not in when he calls he lets himself in! He said its the law that they have to be checked and he doesn't want to be prosecuted for man slaughter if there is a fire and someone is killed!

I forgot to add it did make it difficult for the fire service to enter the building due to the number of entrances in which I think made it confusing for them

Never had the fire brigade out to my flats, but have had lots of letters through saying they are happy to do an inspection and fit a fire alarm for free.
Having said that though, the flats were significantly modified a few years back to upgrade the fire proofing, and have been fully assessed recently as a result of the fire down London way, and have been deemed to be top-rated when it comes to fire safety, and fire containment. If a fire happens in one area of the flats, it should be completely contained on that floor and within that specific area for 6 hours iirc.
We also have monthly fire checks as part of the weekly maintenance checks, and best of all, there is no gas in the flats, its all electric.
90% of my electrical appliances are turned of when im not using them, so the chances of that are also remote.
I should probably still get a smoke alarm, I guess I will one day.

The beauty of a fire service fitted smoke alarm is that they have a battery that lasts about ten years, that's what i was informed by them and also they call from time to time to check them out. When they fitted mine, they fitted theirs along side the ones i already had. At least i have nothing to worry about should the ones i fitted have battery failure and i have not got a battery to hand.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.

It's always a terrible thing to happen.
Just to be sure, switch off all your plugs before bed and please check your smoke alarms!!
