yeh it needs to be connected to the modem. stupid question, is his laptop wireless enabled?
if so the best way to fix it is if someone came round and just did it... i did it for my dad, it could be one of a million fiddly things but unless someone like me or someone who knows what they're doing gets hold of it, we can't say what'll 100% fix it, just we need to mess about and sort it by "trial and error" but not so much random as the saying suggests.

Well it's obviously a DNS problem, did you flush the DNS cache?
start > run > cmd > ipconfig /flushdns
Once that's done do ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
Should fix it.

Doesn't matter where you try it, all it does is force the computer to recheck the DNS.

thanx for replying guys it said it was connected to his 02 broadband in his house so i thought that would mean his wireless was on but i'll check tomorrow and it said it was connected to 3 on my dongle in my house and it still wouldnt connect and find the net ?? It can still show connected if the Network key was changed at the router. Ok re-read the first post. It could be a firewall setting, as some Fire wall software actually will block an application if you don't give an accept or reject with in 50 seconds (web root). He could have also installed a second Firewall software so there fighting each other and no one will win and no connection. Look in the add removed programs if there isnt a icon on the desk top with something obvious. Flushing the DNS as Ex0 recommends isnt going to hurt. It will flush the DNS on your dads laptop only. Final point is that a Reboot after all the changes can help things settle down. Please list the Operating system and any extra internet security programs. If its a Dongle, just try plugging it into a different USB on the laptop that could re-install the drivers and you may just catch that firewall prompt. Hope that may help.
