Last night I am pretty sure the scrap piles in Bootle were working and I think noise carries over from there with the cranes, etc continually bleeping a warning that they are moving. The air was still and any slight breeze was coming from that direction and as it does it carries the sound with it. Since earlier this morning the wind has change yet again and is blowing from the South down the river to the estuary. These sounds are nothing like the shipping fog horns going this morning.

Anyone with a musical ear? "Each of the Mersey Ferries carries two Kockums Super Tyfon TA 100/165 type fog horns. These are the original horns fitted when the ferries were first built. Both Royal Iris of the Mersey and Snowdrop have an E-flat tone, and Royal Daffodil's is in F Sharp." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersey_Ferry

Just a point, if you are interested, all the fixed fog horns have different blast durations and rest periods. These are marked on the charts so you know where you are. A lot of them have been decommissioned due to sat nav and radar. Lifesavers in the past though.

Just been on the ferry (obvs its back on). Sounding the fog horn every 5 seconds-was glad when the commentary came on and drowned it out.

that video was soooooo good. It almost brought tears to my eyes as it reminded me of many years ago when I lived in Hr Tranmere and could hear that from my bedroom, I could almost smell the river too watching that clip!
