The old shops, the chippy was opposite, I think it was called "Macs". The bookies was a little further up.
Shops are now garages with flats above them.

Hi again , Iremember the chippy it was known as Mrs Macs , if my memory is right I am pretty sure the chip friers were heated by coal boilers. The picture seems to me to show Johnny Lodges off licence , it was built to be a public house but never got a licence, so it became an off licence , went there for my granddad the counter was very high , this was on the corner of Ashville road.

Cant remeber the boilers, but I remember you had the choice of 3d or 4d worth of scallops. I always chose 3d being a cheapskate :-)

Yes that was Johnny lodges, he used to sell us loosies when we were kids. When we were teenagers we would buy bottles of rich red ruby from him, usually made us sick, but oh what happy days

Did you ever climb over the wall and take the bottles from the crates , then take them backn into the shop for 3d on the bottle . They finally got wise to us and started marking the bottles We used to buy a bottle of Qc wine for 1/9d or 2.6d, it was foul but we still drank it.

My mum,dad and grand parents knew Johnny Lodge very well, so I had no chance of buying booze before I was 18. Somewhere I have a postcard that was sent to Johnnys daughter from someone, it was passed down to me from my mum. I`ll have to dig it out one day.

I remember Macs chippy. It was run by Mr and Mrs Mac and their daughter who I think was called Jean. Mr Mac was always shoveling coal in the fires underneath the chip fryers and then nipping next door to the Bird in Hand for a bevvie! You could also stand on a box at the front of the queue when Mrs Mac would give you a couple of chips wrapped around the small bags they used to put your chips in - but they were always out of your order - clever marketing.
