that video was soooooo good. It almost brought tears to my eyes as it reminded me of many years ago when I lived in Hr Tranmere and could hear that from my bedroom, I could almost smell the river too watching that clip! Hi Elizabeth, how are you. Very cold here and as you note fog on the river. Did you see Wench's pics of the foggy river in the last couple of days. They are brilliant. Keep warm.

They used to have fog horns for certain things and Fog Bell which would chime every few seconds and through the night when the Ferries weren't running. Maybe it has been updated now to something more digital. The bell was the eeriest sound....very spooky and lonely.

So was it fog horns? We could hear it, thought someone had windchimes or something! Fog horns are generally used on the boats to tell others they are about. If you say it sounded ike wind chimes, then it would probably be the bell, which is sounded from the landing stages and as explained above, they ring every few seconds. I may be wrong but that was how it used to be.

Last night I am pretty sure the scrap piles in Bootle were working and I think noise carries over from there with the cranes, etc continually bleeping a warning that they are moving. The air was still and any slight breeze was coming from that direction and as it does it carries the sound with it. Since earlier this morning the wind has change yet again and is blowing from the South down the river to the estuary. These sounds are nothing like the shipping fog horns going this morning. Remember clearly hearing Michael Jackson's concert in Aintree years ago like that, all the way to Birkenhead.

Strange, Mum said she googled it and found some story about people banging metal together meaning they were going after someone, or something. I don't think it was that though

As title says all through the night a continous beeping noise like a warning noise or something. Is it fog warning for boats etc? It sounds like a beep to me?

Maybe repeating what has already been said, but the beeping is either the stacker trucks or the dumper trucks reversing. When the atmosphear is still the noise is louder!
